How do you grind a false edge on a knife.

It can weaken the point, so be aware of what is happening to the thickness of the point as you proceed. On some knives a nice thin point is good, on others it might mean trouble. Just pay attention and don't put much pressure on the blade as you are working out near the point, since there is not much steel there and it grinds away very easily. You are using that grinder to sculpt the steel and it's up to you to make it do what you want it to do. Not too easy at times, I must admit! Have fun!

If you don't have luck grinding the bevel the same way you do the primary bevel, you might try grinding the bevel with the knife held vertically. Start with the side of the point just touching the wheel and add pressure as you run the knife down. A lot of the guys who forge use this method. It takes a little practice like everything else.

I've been grappling with the same problem, and the answer
seems to be less is more, resisting the temptation to grind
the false edge too deep and too far down the width of the blade.
It helps to scribe a line from the point back to where the false edge begins, then grind a shallow cut, deepening with each subsequent pass
until you hit the line. Working out the vector with the main bevel
in a hollow grind is a challenge. I guess the first 300 years are the
hardest.
